She is founding director of Other Matter, the studio's applied research practice, where scaleable ideas developed here move into circular material systems for architecture and industry.
French’s practice examines petrochemical dominance, chemical pollution and environmental justice through material and spatial interventions. Her work traces the biological origins of fossil fuels, centring the contradiction of mobilising deep time for disposable use. Operating across installation, liquid-formed works and material systems, French develops new material frameworks that challenge inherited models of material permanence and lifecycle, asking how artistic inquiry might accelerate real-world ecological transformation.
This investigation evolved into Other Matter, a materials studio French founded in 2021 to translate laboratory experimentation into regenerative alternatives to conventional plastics. Grounded in closed-loop thinking and addressing the interdependencies between material culture, consumption and ecological consequence, Other Matter develops non-petrochemical polymers for architectural, commercial and spatial applications. The studio's breakthrough came in 2024 with the introduction of OM Signage Film and Other Matter Surface Film, world-first, patented algae-based alternatives to PVC signage, material and privacy films, engineered for circular reuse and full recyclability. Through craft-based processes applied to novel material formulations, the studio creates functional objects that reimagine material production within a post-petrochemical framework.
Other Matter's material systems have been internationally recognised by D&AD, Dezeen, Frame and Good Design awards. In 2024, the studio's research was awarded 'Most Promising Advancement in Achieving the Ending Plastic Waste Mission Goal' by Australia's Federal Science Agency, CSIRO, contributing to Australia's leadership under the UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution. The work has secured major commercial partnerships and been deployed across global retail and architectural contexts.
French's artistic practice and research are held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Anchorage Museum, Alaska. Recent exhibitions include Museum für Gestaltung Zürich (2026), Design Museum London (2025), National Gallery of Victoria (2025, 2023), Royal Academy of Arts London (2024), Institute of Modern Art Brisbane (2023), 23rd Biennale of Sydney (2022), and The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Tasmania (2022). She is a 2023 George Alexander Foundation Fellow and served as the inaugural designer-in-residence at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York (2024).
